What We Build in the Dark
What We Build in the Dark explores the inner dialogue between darkness and light—the opposing forces that live, struggle, and coexist within each of us.
On one side, Spirit emerges through a luminous blue haze against a landscape of purple and pink. These ethereal forms represent love, connection, and the quiet power that exists when we remember who we are beneath fear—the part of ourselves that knows we are never truly alone.
Across from them rises a dark, distorted castle, engulfed by orange and red flames. The castle represents the narratives we build within ourselves: stories shaped by fear, shame, pain, and the beliefs we have carried for so long that they can begin to feel like truth. We construct them brick by brick until, sometimes, we find ourselves living inside them.
The fire is both darkness and transformation. It threatens to consume, yet it also holds the possibility of burning away what no longer belongs.
The two worlds exist within the same painting because they exist within the same heart.
This piece is not about good defeating evil. It is about recognizing the conversation happening inside us—the constant tension between fear and love, distortion and truth, shadow and Spirit.
Perhaps the darkness within us is not something we are meant simply to destroy, but something we are meant to see.
Because once we can see what we have built in the dark, we can begin to decide whether we still want to live there.
